What is Rackspace?
Unlike Amazon Web services Rackspace uses very simple terms and simple interface for all the similar services offered by them. Hence it is very much helpful for the newbies and developers who have limited knowledge about servers. Rackspace has data centers at 6 regions where you can choose your preferred location(depending on your target audience) to build your infrastructure. Let’s talk about the services offered by Rackspace.
Rackspace Cloud Servers
Rackspace cloud servers are just same as standalone servers. apart from the fact that they are VMs hosted on a high end hypervisors, anyways you are not going to feel that you are using a VM. Rackspace cloud servers are compared to Amazon’s EC2 servers as they serve the same purpose. They are built on RAID 10 configured Solid-State drives with powerful Xeon processors and 40Gb/sec network. Their cost starts with $0.032/hour. Of course this information about resources might change in the future.
Cloud Block Storage
Rackspace offers Cloud block storage service, where you can add/delete storage to your cloud servers at any point of time. They are available with Standard and SSD volumes, you may choose them with respeect to your requirements.
Rackspace offers database services just like Amazon’s RDS service.
The best feature of cloud is it’s scalability, you can scale up or down your server resources with respect to time and hence save server cost by paying less on less busy hours. Rack space offers Scheduled-Based and Event-based autoscaling.
You may configure scaling options with respect to time. Hence the number of instance running on that particular time will be more when compared to night. Eg: Let’s say you have a route Map app for US hosted in Rackspace server. The number of people who use your app during day time will be more than those who are access during night time. Hence you can have multiple instances running to handle all the requests for your app during day time and very few instances running during night time.
You may configure scaling options with respect to the server’s load values. Where, if the server load goes beyond a threshold value the autoscaling will launch new instances with the image backup that you already taken of the current server and balance the load to handle more requests. You may use selective third party monitoring softwares like Nagios, or you can use Rackspace’s cloud monitoring tool to configure threshold values.
